I dabbled with the barrel jeans back in 2022 when they were first a micro trend (I actually bought the Mother jeans mentioned in this newsletter as they were one of the first brands to offer the style). I absolutely love them and have bought a few more pairs from other brands since. I think the style is the perfect mix of fitted and relaxed. It seems they are totally mainstream now, with madewell offering them for fall 2024. I hope they become a classic bc I would be sad if they start to look dated/out of style.
Kate’s story. Wow. Full of heart & soul - and I just love hearing a backstory of a beloved pair of jeans. Thanks for sharing! (And I love my Pier shirt 🥰)
P.S. Watched a Jean Cocteau film last night. He had on these dark denim very wide yet straight leg jeans, huge cuff at the bottom. Where he kept a pack of smokes, and called them his “American Pants”. Amazing.
I actually really love barrel jeans-- I have a small waist and wider hips/behind. They are the only kind of jeans that give me that oversized, low-slung look. My current favorites are the Nili Lotan shon jeans but looking for something with a similar shape with no darts.
Thank you for putting into words exactly why barrel jeans are so appealing for me, Maya! It sounds like we have similar body types and the feeling of a baggy yet sculptures fit is one that I haven’t been able to find in any other denim shape. I’m partial to Tibi’s Sid silhouette and just picked up a pair from FP as well.
Thanks for featuring the Jamie Haller sandal. Of course I bought them before I finished your post! I also bought (after your post) another Pier shirt in one size up. Both have different uses and I don't know why I never think of it? I'm not a fan of barrel jeans but you look great in everything. Thank you Kate for sharing your story. I too, had a sister who died of an accidental drug overdose 25 years ago this month. X
Hmmm. The barrel or horseshoe jeans are not my personal aesthetic. Though I did try a pair on in store to satisfy my curiosity. Not for me. But, if you’re going to do it, I say wear the more extreme version. Same with wide leg denim. The baby barrels kinda look like mom jeans - very 80s?
I have strong feelings about barrel leg jeans (on me). I hate them! They're shaped exactly the opposite of my body. I'm "knock kneed", meaning that when I stand with my knees touching my feet are about 3" apart. I'm the exact opposite of a bow legged cowboy. My favorite cut of jeans is either straight or flared starting just above the knee so it camouflages the fact that my ankles are not in line with my knees.

Kate’s story is lovely; thanks to both of you for sharing it 💙
Those Levi’s look great!

I’m loving those Jamie Haller sandals (and loafers…). How is the fit? I have narrow feet so often go down a size in sandals
They're the best and actually pretty narrow. I wouldn't size down.
