Hey Mrs. Solomon on Style's avatar

Hello dear Jane! I’m contemplating that recycled straight leg and wondered if you could share thoughts on sizing. I’m a 6, waiver between 28/29. For some bootay/thigh action happening. Thank you for all you do -- a treasure.

Hi Mrs Solomon, Thank you! Now, let's get specific, if you don't mind. I'm 5"4 and wear a 28" inseam. If you are any taller, I'd get the 30" inseam. Size 28 is likely right, as the 100% cotton will give when you wear them. It's not a fit you want to over-size. I'd say, get the size you wear most often in jeans as the fit is very true on all the pairs I tried. Does this help?

Jane, I have been meaning to comment on this, but wanted to wait until I had the time to compose my thoughts. Esprit. WOW! One of the fondest childhood memories I have, is when my family lived in the Bay Area in the early 1980's. My Mom would take me to the Esprit outlet in San Francisco from the East Bay and we would shop until we were starving and then eat chocolate croissants for lunch! It was the beginning of many shopping outings my Mom and I would venture out on for years to come. I recall many purchases from those trips including a classic Esprit Sweatshirt, the also classic tote bag (which I used as my school bag), and my entire matching skirt and shirt set that is forever captured in my 1st grade school picture. Thanks for the trip down memory lane, the details I never knew ( they are not French?!), and the heads up that Esprit is back and the denim is Jane Herman approved.

Lisa! Thank you for taking the time to tell me this story. A chocolate croissant for lunch is basically my own daughter's dream come true, and I can see why those memories with your mom have stuck with you. The skirt set sounds really cute, too. Esprit has done a great job with the jeans, I think – now maybe they can bring back the kids stuff!

I love this, Jane! I’m digging the premium retro wide legs — and adore the vintage jacket. I’ve been following the brand’s journey to relaunch through Ana Andjelic and can’t wait to get to NYC next month to see what they have in store…hopefully cool finds like you’ve showcased.!

Dear Jane,

Thank you for this newsletter - it is the best. Loved JeanStories.com, so I am so happy to find you here. Not a question about jeans, but about your New Balance sneakers. How are they?

Thank you!

Sam

Thank you, Sam! I love seeing Jean Stories readers here :) The sneakers, I love. I'm planning to talk more about them in my next letter, but the short answer is: They are the Nike Waffle Debut and they work with many jeans!

Loved today's letter so much! There is nothing like this in Australia (Esprit with a concept of in-store vintage, Zip/Doctor Denim/his vintage denim wonders)... at least, nothing I am aware of! It sounds incredible. Those two print ads with the denim shacket/shorterall (I cannot tell!) and striped overall are as sublime today as then, with literally timeless styling :) Thank you!

I agree. The old Esprit ads are gorgeous, and they hold up. I'd wear that jacket (I think it's a jacket?) today.

I wish I was in LA! My dream is to be able to find a perfect vintage fit in under ten mins! Good enough of a reason to head back asap...

The irony of being a stylist who cannot find her own perfect fit. Curvy, 5ft10 and 34inch length. Wide legged doesn’t look good...tapered and straight works a treat but so hard to find with my hips and leg length. I tend to trust Agolde and that’s about it...help!

Zip may be able to do phone consultations – it's worth calling him. I imagine he could fit someone based off a picture and some measurements.

Ok I didn’t realize that Esprit still existed! I’m also a child of the 80s, and I had a lot of Esprit clothes...but none in my possession anymore. The wide leg jeans look amazing...but I need an inseam much longer than 28”! Does it exist? I haven’t looked yet, but finding wide-leg jeans which are long enough is always a challenge!

The wide leg style also comes in a 30" inseam!

Zip is a legend! Still have some crazy 70’s high wasted orange tab bell bottom Levi’s I bought from him almost 20 years ago! I have yet to still wear them ! 🤦🏻‍♀️ Platforms need to used which means I will prob break an ankle 🤣 because I refuse to hem them.

Best post ever! I didn’t know they opened a store here! Thank you! Every time I’m in Germany I pop into a shop for a vintage looking tee and have yet to see one. But I think they are just starting to bring them back ?

Anyways I lived in Esprit as a kid. Kicking myself my clothes are all long gone now that I have a daughter!!

Thank you Nat. I know, I wish my mom had kept all my Esprit kids clothes, too. The new store has logo tees in fun colors. Go on Saturday and take the jeans you bought from Zip 20 years ago – he'll be there and he can hem them for you. He'll probably remember them, too, knowing him :)
