About Jane
I’m a writer and designer with 20+ years of experience in the fashion industry. As an editor, I’ve worked at New York Magazine, Elle, Vogue, T: The New York Times Style Magazine, and Travel + Leisure. I’ve also worked on the creative teams at classic American clothing companies like GAP and Theory. For years, I was the co-founder and creative director of JeanStories.com, a fashion site about everything denim. Currently, in addition to this Substack, I write a column for Vogue.com called Jean Files.
I started my clothing company The Only Jane in 2020. An independent collection of denim essentials made in Los Angeles, it is the culmination of everything I’ve learned about the best jeans and how we live in them. I hope you’ll take a look.
I was born in L.A. and grew up selling jeans at my family’s Ron Herman stores. After twenty years in New York and a quick detour in London, I’m now based in Los Angeles, where I live with my husband and our two kids, Georgia and Walter.
About Jane on Jeans
With this newsletter, I’m bringing everything I know about jeans, plus what I’m continuing to discover about shopping for denim online and in-store, straight to your Inbox. Inspirations and advice from other industry experts are often given the spotlight here, too. I love jeans – I can be both deeply sentimental and insanely technical about them – and I have spent my whole career learning more about them through my reporting and design. I have collected hundreds of pairs, from vintage to high street stretch, and there is always something new to try.
Free subscribers receive a weekly post that goes out every Saturday morning (PST). You also get my monthly Jean-Adjacent – a roundup of things and thoughts I’ve found inspiring and helpful in my life as a mom, wife, sister, and friend.
Paid subscribers get all of that plus personalized help finding jeans through my AMA link. Becoming a paid subscriber will also give you early access to sales at The Only Jane.
About The Only Jane
The Only Jane is a collection of denim pieces that I design and manufacture in Los Angeles with great (borderline obsessive?) quality and care. The Georgia is my signature fit – a relaxed mid-rise with a broad, slightly tapered leg. Here’s a video about the Georgia and its inspirations. I also make a high straight leg called The Sally and a cropped barrel named Bob. The Trip jacket is a best-seller that now comes in Jet black.
