The tailors at Parc West Valet Dry Cleaning in NYC (57th just east of 9th) have been altering my jeans for longer than I should share. They have never screwed up an original hem, have patched my jeans that I refuse to give up (some multiple times) and have done more complicated alterations like taking in a waistband.

They’ll also tell you if they can’t match something or think the alteration will not lay right, etc.

This is so informative and delightful! Anyone have a recommendation in Boston?

Kelly is truly one of a kind in Tucson. I have never had such a great experience with a tailor to vintage denim. If you’re contemplating making an appointment, pull the trigger. I would not have the denim I have now if it wasn’t for her. She takes her time to fit jeans to your body and match pieces to you that you will have for a lifetime. Meeting her was one of the best things to happen to me!

Another SF rec: Taraval Tailor in SF. I almost never buy a pair of jeans that fit off the rack because I have wide hips and a smaller waist (the dreaded waist gap is my daily reality). He’ll take apart the back seam and shrink the waist without darts and without creating a baggy crotch. I’ve had him take in 4+ inches and come out the other side with jeans that look perfect. He’s also great for hems and any other alterations (he’s done many a button up shirt for me and my husband). Worth the drive to the outer sunset no matter where in the city you live.

Would you say adding darts to take in the waist/butt 'cheapens' the style? I had Nordstrom West Village alter R13 Jane jeans. They did center darts and slightly taken in from the side. I'm afraid they ruined the look of them.
