Great post. I’m writing this on the plane on the way home from a week’s vacation in Madrid with my teenage daughter. One thing I noticed: Madrilenos / Madrilenas are incredibly, incredibly chic. I would say even more so than people in Paris. I wanted to start surreptitiously snapping photos of people on the street and in restaurants! So many great blazers, jeans, shoes, everything so considered and perfect.
Gosh I loved reading this and felt like I was there with you, the trepidation of setting my kids up in a totally unfamiliar, alien environs, the making a house a home, the language barrier! I hope each moment spent in your new surrounds has you excited for the wonderful adventure ahead of you all!
As an aside, I am Australian and all the harnesses here in children's car seats are two straps over the shoulder with a fastener in between the legs. Britax definitely has a grip on the Aussie market, 2 out of 3 car seats in my car are Britax! As long your kids are diligent about keeping the straps on their shoulders (my youngest is a nightmare for this!!), and you have the car seat head rest adjusted so the 'wings' of this head rest sit above the shoulders (but only so much can you can slide a flattened hand between their shoulders and the bottom of the wing), it is infinitely safer. Can't wait to read more and see pictures of gloriously chic Spanish jeans-wearers!!
Uff, Madrid is wonderful (I come from Spain). You must go with children to El retiro (park, the library inside is great). I love Chueca and Malasaña and Salesas (La Duquesita) but right now my favorite place is Lavapies. It´s a mixture of cultures and I love Argumosa street, a lot of "tabernas" more or less castizas. Moreover almost every important bookstore has an english area. Librería Machado for example, in your area.
After reading your Substack this morning, I saw in my email that Hereu is having an archive sale in Madrid. The details are below, just in case it’s of interest. I am looking forward to hearing more about y’all’s adventures!!!

My husband is German, and the same car set rules apply there (I think for most of Europe), it's so you can get them out of the seat in an emergency with "one hand/one click". That's what I read in my research.
